Where to Live, in the City or the Country?

A modern city has many conveniences such as electricity, gas, schools, hospitals, cinemas, etc. These conveniences make the city people’s life comfortable and easy. But in big cities, there are crimes, air pollution, and crowdedness, which often bother residents.

The countryside has its own attractions, such as clean air, water, and quiet environment. In addition to these, one can enjoy a peaceful life and beautiful natural scenery. There is no noise, no crowdedness and no crime. But some modern facilities are not available. For example, it may not be very convenient for a person to go to a middle school.

I prefer to live in a city because I was born and grew up there. The problems a city has can be solved by modern science and technology.

7-DAY HOLIDAY

A 7-day holiday came into effect on May Day last year, and it also went for National Day & Spring Festival, which seems to be good news to everyone.

However, this piece of good news also has a dark side. Owing to the large population, most people’s travel experiences during the first 7-day holiday, though well planned in advance, turned sour; they couldn’t book railway tickets; hotels were packed; tourist attractions were all full of people. No wonder that a flood of complaints followed the week – long holiday.

As the saying goes, “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” Longer holidays are certainly desirable, but the government should see that related facilities of holiday activities are promptly adapted to the need.

Why We Work?

People work for a great many reasons. Self-interest in its broadest sense, including the interest of one’s family & friends, is an underlying motivation of work in all societies. However, self-interest is not simply the accumulation of wealth. For instance, even in some primitive tribes, a desire for approval, a sense of duty, a wish to conform to custom also contributes to economic activity.

In other words, few activities seriously compete with work in providing basic life satisfaction. Work, in addition to its economic functions, structures time, provides a context in which to relate to other people, offers an escape from boredom, and sustains a sense of worth.

In conclusion, a man’s work is a major social device for his identification as an adult.

Preserving Natural Resources

Ever since man appeared on the earth, man’s survival has been heavily relying on nature. Almost everything we use in our everyday life comes from nature. With the development of technology and population growth, the amount and range of materials used has increased at an alarming rate. However, natural resources are not inexhaustible.

Some reserves are already on the brink of exhaustion and there is no hope of replacing them. The widespread water shortage is an example in point. If man continued to squander natural resources with no thought for the future, the whole world would be in a mess.

Time is running out. It is up to us to take effective measures before the situation gets out of hand.

Cars and Air Pollution

Cars have created a lot of serious problems in our world. All the time, they are pumping huge amounts of waste gases into the atmosphere, causing disease and even death.

One possible solution is to design and develop clean cars and clean fuels. But it may take decades for the new models to completely replace the traditional ones.

Another solution is to develop modern public transportation systems and restrict the use of private cars. If the price of petrol rises constantly and the public vehicles are efficient and convenient enough, most people will not drive private cars. On the whole, the elimination of air pollution needs the co-efforts from the government and the public. This problem will be solved only with the help of science and technology.
